Classroom table and chair heights by age

Well-sized furniture is one of the simplest ways to improve comfort, posture and focus. Our chairs and tables follow the BS EN 1729 size marks, which pair each seat height with a matching table height.

Ages are a guide only; children of the same age vary a lot in height, so check the fit with the children who'll use the room. The size guide works from height.

How to check the fit

  • Feet: flat on the floor, knees at roughly 90 degrees.
  • Arms: forearms rest on the table, with the top just below elbow height.
  • Legs: room for thighs under the table, so children get in and out on their own.
  • Match the marks: a C1 chair with a C1 table. Mismatched sizes are the most common cause of poor posture at the table.

Mixed-age rooms

Many services use two sizes in one room, such as C0 and C1 for toddlers or C1 and C2 for preschool, each with a matching table. Stackable chairs make it easy to change the mix as enrolments change.

Educators

At an adult desk, use a C6 chair (46 cm) with a 76 cm table, or C5 (43 cm, 71 cm) for a lower position. When sitting with children, a low adult chair or stool near the children's table height keeps educators at eye level without strain.

Quick answers

What size suits a 3-year-old? Most suit C1 (26 cm seat, 46 cm table); smaller children may fit C0.

How high should a kindergarten table be? For ages 4–6, a 53 cm table with 31 cm chairs (C2) suits most children.

What is BS EN 1729? The European standard for educational chairs and tables. It sets the size marks and the strength and stability requirements.

Why does it matter? Well-fitted furniture supports posture and independence and reduces fidgeting, and it links to the physical environment expectations in NQS Quality Area 3.
